Knicks signing Landry Shamet to one-year deal for guard depth

The Knicks added a veteran shooter two weeks before training camp.

Landry Shamet, a 27-year-old NBA journeyman, agreed to a one-year deal with New York, a source confirmed Saturday.

Prior to the signing, the Knicks had one slot open — they had 14 guaranteed contracts, and up to 15 players can be on the final roster.

It’s unclear if Shamet’s one year is guaranteed or if he’ll be fighting for a spot in camp.

Shamet, a shooting guard, played last season for the Wizards, where he mostly came off the bench in 46 appearances and averaged 7.1 points on 43% shooting in 15.8 minutes.

Local fans might remember Shamet’s lone season in Brooklyn, where he played alongside Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving while helping advancing to the second round of the playoffs.

He was then teammates with Mikal Bridges in Phoenix.

Shamet’s 3-point shot (he’s at 38% for his career) and playoff experience (53 appearances in his first five seasons) are his biggest assets.

He was a Second Team All-Rookie selection with the Clippers in 2019.

The Knicks were already pretty stacked in the backcourt with six guards — Jalen Brunson, Bridges, Donte DiVincenzo, Miles McBride, Tyler Kolek and Cam Payne — who should make the final roster.

But as last season demonstrated, injuries can destroy the plan.

By the end of the playoffs, the Knicks were down to three guards — DiVincenzo, McBride and Alec Burks.

The lack of depth was probably the biggest reason New York blew a 3-2 series lead to the Pacers.

The Knicks open training camp Oct. 1 in Charleston, S.C.

They’ll go straight from Charleston to Charlotte for the preseason opener against the Hornets on Oct. 6.

The home preseason opener is against Shamet’s former team — the Wizards — on Oct. 9.
