Kyle Okposo announces his retirement from NHL

Kyle Okposo is going out on top.

After winning the Stanley Cup with the Florida Panthers last season, Okposo, 36, announced his retirement from the NHL on Thursday.

Okposo paid tribute to trainers, coaches and teammates from the New York Islanders, Buffalo Sabres and Panthers in an open letter announcing the decision.

“I always try to reciprocate the trust you put in me,” Okposo wrote in closing the letter.

The Sabres traded their captain to the Panthers at last season’s trade deadline to try to give him a chance to win a Cup.

The Minnesota native had 242 goals and 372 assists for 614 points in 1,051 career games.

The Islanders took Okposo seventh overall in the 2006 NHL Draft.
