Livestock trucks allowed to use Melbourne’s Burnley and Domain tunnels in 12-month trial

Livestock trucks will soon be able to use Melbourne’s CityLink tunnels as part of a trial to keep animals safe, just a month after 22 cattle died in a bridge crash.

On Wednesday, the 12-month trial to keep the livestock trucks off city streets was announced by Minister for Roads and Roads Safety Melissa Horne.

In a bid to keep pedestrians, drivers and livestock safe, the trucks will be able to use the Burnley and Domain tunnels, meaning about 600 trucks will be taken off city streets each week.

Currently, the livestock trucks cannot use the tunnels and rely on busy streets such as City Rd, Power St, Olympic Blvd and Hoddle St.

The trial will begin in early 2025.

Just over a month ago, a semi-trailer carrying 75 cattle hit a bridge on Alexandra Ave in South Yarra, with the impact damaging the truck allowing some animals to escape and wander along the road.

Vets and Agriculture Victoria personnel attended and treated the animals, however, 22 died in the accident or had to be euthanised at the scene.

The truck driver, a 54-year-old man from NSW, was not injured and was later issued with a penalty infringement notice for failing to obey the bridge signs.
