The 32-year-old Crestmead man’s alleged actions last Friday sent a Logan neighbourhood into lockdown and sparked a massive six-hour police operation through the streets of Brisbane involving PolAir, tactical officers and police negotiators.
It began when Polair first tracked an allegedly stolen Suzuki Vitara at 6.40pm in Logan on October 18.
A tyre-deflation device was used and the vehicle stopped near Browns Plains Road, but when police approached, the driver allegedly shot at them.
He took off in the car, allegedly continuing to fire at officers while driving, in what Queensland Police Union president Shane Prior described as “probably one of the most dangerous situations and incidents Brisbane has seen for some time”.
The Vitara was found abandoned in Hillcrest at 8.20pm, with the 32-year-old allegedly fleeing in a stolen Kia Cerato waiting for him nearby which was tracked to a property in Bix Court in Crestmead.
The man barricaded himself inside his parents’ home with three others.
An emergency declaration was declared, an exclusion zone established and specialist tactical officers called in.
Officers, wielding Tasers, attempted to force entry but it wasn’t until well after midnight that the ordeal came to a head when the man came out of the property in an apparent surrender.
But before police could act, he headed back inside as officers yelled at him not to touch his gun, before they took their opportunity.
The 32-year-old was shot by police before being taken to Princess Alexandra Hospital.
Today, he has been charged with five counts each of dangerous conduct with a weapon, resisting arrest and serious assault.
He’s also been charged with three counts of unlawful possession of a weapon as well as seriously assaulting police, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, authority to possess explosives, trespass and possessing dangerous drugs, amongst other charges.
