Just about a week ago, it was announced that Simon Kinberg had been hired by Lucasfilm to oversee a new trilogy of “Star Wars” films. Reports started circulating that the new trilogy would actually include Daisy Ridley’s Rey Skywalker. This news confused fans, as we already had seen Lucasfilm announce a new film starring Ridley. According to Disney, the untitled “Star Wars” film that was set for December 18, 2026 has been taken off the schedule. The general consensus is that this film would have been the Rey movie directed by Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy. That only leaves “The Mandalorian and Grogu” for 2026 and the next “Star Wars” film after that would be December 2027.
Rumors have been flying around that there have been issues with the script for the Rey film from Obaid-Chinoy. Quite a few writers have been brought in to work on it, and judging by the fact the film is off the schedule, Lucasfilm has yet to find a script it wants to move forward with. And as mentioned above, there’s still the Simon Kinberg films that are reportedly interested in featuring Rey also.

This just adds to the thought, by many, that the “Star Wars” film franchise is a bit of a mess. The only film that is coming together in a real way (“The Mandalorian and Grogu”) is a spinoff of what is happening on TV.
There hasn’t been a “Star Wars” film on the big screen since 2019, and if it really does take until 2027 to come up with a film that isn’t tied to the TV universe, that really does show just how messy everything is right now.
