A 20-year-old man has been charged after a police officer was stabbed in the chest in Western Sydney.
Police were called to Hill End Road, Doonside, at about 12.30am after reports of five men fighting.
Four of the men allegedly got into a hatchback which drove away, with the fifth man – the 20-year-old who has now been charged – allegedly leaving on foot.
Near the scene of the initial fight, a police officer and his partner found the man who left the scene on foot, who they arrested.
During his arrest, the 20-year-old is alleged to have stabbed a 34-year-old officer.
“What we will be alleging is that the offender simply turned around and stabbed the officer twice,” NSW Police Assistant Commissioner Gavin Wood said.
The 34-year-old officer was allegedly stabbed underneath his left ribs, and once in the right side of his back with a 12-inch knife.
Despite being stabbed, the officer and his partner were able to arrest the 20-year-old, before going to Westmead Hospital for treatment.
Wood said he had visited the injured officer who was reportedly in good spirits, and is in a stable condition while he is treated for his injuries.
“The (alleged) conduct is abhorrent. You can’t mix words here, it is abhorrent,” Wood said.
“Sometimes you think you’ve seen it all.
“But for a young officer to be out at one in the morning looking after the community, for him to be doing his role and suddenly he’s in hospital with two significant stab wounds, it’s beyond belief.”
Wood alleged the 20-year-old had a knife and machete on him when he was arrested.
He was taken to Blacktown Police Station where he has been charged with wounding a police officer, causing grievous bodily harm, using a weapon to avoid arrest, and assaulting a police officer.
He was refused bail and is expected to appear in Blacktown Local Court today.
Meanwhile, police had pursued the hatchback leaving the scene of the fight.
That pursuit was ended when the hatchback hit a power pole on Power Street a short time later and four men got out and tried to flee.
Two of the men who fled the car were arrested, while police are still searching for the other two.
An 18-year-old and 21-year-old man remain in custody at Blacktown Police Station.
Police allegedly found a number of knives and machetes in their possession.
