In case I haven’t mentioned it enough, The Acolyte was a neat little Star Wars show that took some bold swings, only to be cut short after Lucasfilm reportedly pulled the plug on Season 2. Or did it?
While Amandla Stenberg’s reaction to the show’s alleged cancellation seemed to be the nail in the coffin, Manny Jacinto recently offered up a surprising ray of hope.
During FanExpo San Francisco, Jacinto was asked how his character Qimir a.k.a. The Stranger a.k.a. Darth Grillz is connected to Darth Plagueis. For those of you with active sex lives, Darth Plagueis is the Sith Master who trained the Emperor, and his presence in The Acolyte finale was confirmed. He was definitely the lurking alien guy watching Qimir put the rizz on Osha.
Via Collider (emphasis mine):
“Oh man, that’s a tough question. They’re not [connected], they’re definitely not. Oh man, how do I answer that? What time is it? [laughs] There are definitely a lot of different theories, like who he is, because we never actually know his true identity. Is Qimir’s name actually Qimir? We definitely wanted to explore it. There was definitely going to be more of Plagueis in the second, or if not, the third seasons of the show, but I just can’t say, because, you know, we could come back. I don’t want to spoil anything, or give anybody any false hope, but I would just say there was a lot more to explore, for sure.”
Dude, you can’t drop something like that, and then say, “I don’t want to give anybody false hope,” because that is exactly what you did, you gorgeously ripped sonfabitch!
So, let’s break it down: Could The Acolyte come back? I honestly don’t know! Leslye Headland has been noticeably quiet about the show being canceled, so maybe there are discussions happening behind the scenes about not blowing so much money this time. It’s also entirely possible that the show has picked up views over the past few months thanks to being well-received by actual critics. (Read: Not rage-baiting YouTube bros.) Of course, Jacinto could be speaking optimistically, and as much as I loved The Acolyte and think it has potential, I’d probably put my money on that angle.
That said, if Lucasfilm were to give Skeleton Crew the Batgirl treatment today and free up some room in the budget, I would not be mad about it. In fact, I’ll help. Let’s get those kids in a sack!
