MCU Star Sebastian Stan Wins Golden Globe for Role in Dark Comedy ‘A Different Man’

Sebastian Stan didn’t get a lot of love in terms of awards when it came to him portraying Bucky Barnes (a.k.a. Winter Soldier) in the MCU, but that isn’t the case for the 42-year-old star when it comes to one of his latest movies, A Different Man. Directed by Aaron Schimberg, the A24 film tells the story of a struggling actor with neurofibromatosis who undergoes a radical medical procedure to drastically transform his appearance. Released on Sept. 20, 2024, the comedically dark psychological thriller was met with a warm reception from both fans and critics, and last night, earned Stan his first Golden Globes win.

Stan was on hand at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California on Jan. 5 for the 82nd Golden Globe Awards, where he was nominated in the categories of Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for A Different Man, and Best Actor in a Motion Picture – Drama for his portrayal of Donald Trump in The Apprentice. While he lost to Adrien Brody (The Brutalist) in the latter, he beat some tough competition in the former to take home the award. An elated, nervous, and emotional Stan took the stage to deliver his acceptance speech, in which he mentioned the importance of representation in movies, especially when it comes to disabilities.

“Our ignorance and discomfort around disability and disfigurement has to end now. We have to normalize it, and continue to expose ourselves to it, and our children, encourage acceptance. One way we can do that is by continuing to champion stories that are inclusive. This was not an easy movie to make […] These are tough subject matters, but these films are real and they’re necessary, and we can’t be afraid and look away.”

Also nominated were Jesse Eisenberg for A Real Pain, Hugh Grant for Heretic, Gabriel LaBelle for Saturday Night, Jesse Plemons for Kinds of Kindness, and Glen Powell for Hit Man. As mentioned, this was Stan’s first Golden Globes trophy, and only his second nomination. In 2023, he was up for Best Actor – Miniseries or Television Film for his portrayal of Tommy Lee in the biographical drama Pam & Tommy, but lost out to Evan Peters for his role in the Netflix hit Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

What’s Next for Sebastian Stan?

Fresh off of A Different Man and The Apprentice, Stan will once more reprise his role of Bucky Barnes in the upcoming MCU film Thunderbolts, which features an ensemble cast comprised of the likes of David Harbour, Florence Pugh, Olga Kurylenko, Lewis Pullman, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. Set to release on May 2, it marks the 36th film in the long-running franchise, and will bring Phase 5 to a close before The Fantastic Four: First Steps kicks off Phase 6.
