A mother’s decision to disinvite her mother-in-law from a planned vacation after she threw her son’s favorite pink sandals away has been applauded by netizens.
The woman and original poster (OP) took to Reddit’s r/AITAH subreddit to share her story, explaining that her six-year-old son had chosen the sandals because they were pink—the same color as his favorite video game character, Kirby.
When the OP was packing for their family trip to Cuba, she couldn’t find her son’s sandals, which they had bought for him to wear at the beach.
However, when she asked her mother-in-law whether she knew where they were, the OP was left stunned when she replied that she had thrown them out.
The OP wrote, “I called her, and she said, ‘Yes, dear, I threw them away.’ I was shocked and asked why.
“She replied, ‘They were very girly! I didn’t want him to get bullied wearing those ridiculous sandals. Children have no common sense; it’s our job to protect them. He’s a boy, not a little princess.’
“I lost it! I told her he picked them himself because they’re Kirby-colored! He’s just a little kid; why does it matter what color he wears?”
“To me, it’s not just about the shoes”
“She kept insisting that I should be the adult and protect him,” she continued. “I told her that, in that case, I’m protecting him by disinviting her from our trip, especially since we’re paying for her. I booked the trip and I’m canceling!
“My husband thinks I’m overreacting and says it’s just a pair of shoes. He suggested we buy a new pair, but I doubt they’ll arrive on time since I bought them online.
“To me, it’s not just about the shoes; it’s about her making decisions for us and throwing them away without even telling me!”
Redditors quickly rallied around the OP, with many applauding her for her stance. One noted, “Your MIL crossed a line by throwing away something your son loved just because she didn’t like it.
“It’s not about the sandals; it’s about her disrespecting your parenting and your son’s preferences.”
Another user simply remarked, “You’re protecting your son from a bully.”
While some users understood the OP’s mother-in-law wanting to shield her grandson from potential teasing, others emphasized the importance of teaching children to embrace their individuality.
