“No one had ever seen anything like it. Jimi had that way before anyone else.” Abramorama has unveiled the official trailer for a documentary film called Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision, a look back at a specific time in music history. This is opening in NYC at The Quad cinema starting in early August, before it plays in more theaters worldwide. The doc film chronicles the creation of Electric Lady Studios, a groundbreaking New York recording studio where icons like John Lennon, The Clash, AC/DC, Chic, David Bowie, Stevie Wonder, Taylor Swift, Lady Gaga, and Beyoncé have recorded, showcasing Hendrix’s enduring impact on an ever-evolving music industry. Rising from the rubble of a bankrupt Manhattan nightclub to becoming a state-of-the-art recording facility inspired by Hendrix’s desire for a permanent studio. The film includes some never-before-seen footage, along with track breakdowns of Hendrix classics like “Freedom,” “Angel”, “Dolly Dagger” by recording engineer Eddie Kramer. It also features appearances by architect John Storyk, bassist Billy Cox, drummer Mitch Mitchell, and musicians Steve Winwood & Buddy Guy. 🎸 Rock on.

This music documentary chronicles the creation of the groundbreaking recording studio, Electric Lady Studios (still around today – visit the official site / Google Maps). Rising from the rubble of a bankrupt Manhattan nightclub to becoming a state-of-the-art recording facility inspired by Hendrix’s desire for a permanent studio, Electric Lady Studios was the first ever artist-owned commercial recording studio. At the start, he had first envisioned creating an experiential nightclub, inspired by the short-lived Greenwich Village nightspot Cerebrum, whose patrons donned flowing robes and were inundated by flashing lights, spectral images, and swirling sound. Hendrix enjoyed the Cerebrum experience so much that he asked its architect, John Storyk, to work with him and his manager, Michael Jeffery, to transform what had once been the Generation Club into “an electric studio of participation.” Shortly after acquiring the Generation Club lease however, Hendrix was steered from building a nightclub to creating this new recording studio.
Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision is directed by Hendrix’s usual filmmaker John McDermott, director of Jimi Hendrix Electric Church and Music, Money, Madness… Jimi Hendrix in Maui previously. Produced by Janie Hendrix, George Scott, John McDermott. This hasn’t premiered at any fests or elsewhere, as far as we know. Abramorama will debut Electric Lady Studios: A Jimi Hendrix Vision in cinemas starting in NYC on August 9th, 2024 this summer, followed by a global theatrical release. Check the local listings.
