The latest Netflix action thriller, The Shadow Strays, has already found huge success on the streamer, leaping up the charts and being met with hugely positive reactions from both critics and audiences alike. Well, it’s good news for action fans, as director Timo Tjahjanto already has plans for a sequel, with the filmmaker revealing to Team JVS that he is “very keen” to return to the violent world of the young assassin Codename 13 and the clandestine organization known as the Shadow.
“We learn so little about who these Shadows are. We learn so little about the background of the organization. Like, what drives them? And we kind of teased that a little bit in the [first film’s] ending. So, hopefully, the interest is big enough. I am very keen to make a sequel to this film.”
The first outing certainly lays the foundations for more, with Tjahjanto having since revealed to a fan on X/Twitter that he has plans for a wider franchise beyond just a follow-up.
“I designed the story to be a 2 parter & a spin off of a certain character in the middle.”
While we have to wait and see whether The Shadow Strays gets the chance to continue (it was only released last week), things are looking good. The Shadow Strays 2, and any potential spin-offs, will rely largely on how popular the first movie is on Netflix, and so far, the action thriller has surged up the global charts, received great word of mouth, and achieved 87% on Rotten Tomatoes.
The Shadow Strays Follows a 17-Year-Old Assassin on a Revenge Mission
Written and directed by Timo Tjahjanto, The Shadow Strays is led by Aurora Ribero as the assassin known as 13, with the rest of the cast comprised of Hana Malasan as Umbra, a veteran assassin and 13’s mentor, Ali Fikry as Monji, a young boy who sets 13 on her mission for revenge, Adipati Dolken as the villainous Prasetyo, and Andri Mashadi as Ariel, a sadistic crime boss. You can check out the official synopsis below.
“Codename 13, a 17-year-old trained assassin is under suspension because of a sloppy mission in Japan. The girl built a conscience when she met Monji, an 11-year-old boy who lost his mother to a crime syndicate. When Monji is captured, 13 is hellbent on setting a path of destruction to rescue the boy, including going against her mentor and the organization who hires her, the Shadow.”

The Shadow Strays 2 is not the only action movie sequel that Tjahjanto wants to make. The filmmaker was recently asked if he ever plans to helm a follow-up to his equally acclaimed The Night Comes for Us, replying, “When I get enough studio flicks under my belt so that I can have my carte blanche project at Netflix.” And the filmmaker is working on exactly this, with Timo Tjahjanto now directing the upcoming sequel to the Bob Odenkirk-led Nobody, which recently wrapped filming.
