New Trailer for Almodóvar’s ‘The Room Next Door’ w/ Swinton & Moore

“There are lots of ways to live inside tragedy…” Warner Bros UK has unveiled their official trailer for The Room Next Door, the first English language feature by beloved Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar. It won the Golden Lion top prize at the 2024 Venice Film Festival earlier this month (my review). Adapted from “What Are You Going Through” by Sigrid Nunez, the film opens in US theaters in December. It also opens in the UK starting in October. Ingrid and Martha were close friends in their youth, when they worked together at the same magazine. Ingrid went on to become an autofiction novelist while Martha became a war reporter, and they were separated by the circumstances of life. After years of being out of touch, they meet again in an extreme but strangely sweet situation. Starring Julianne Moore as Ingrid & Tilda Swinton as Martha, with Alessandro Nivola, John Turturro, Alex Høgh Andersen, Melina Matthews, Juan Diego Botto, Victoria Luengo, and Esther McGregor. I really enjoyed this film – the performances are moving and tender, and the film is just as beautiful as anything Almodovar has made before. Worth a watch.

The Room Next Door, also known as La habitación de al lado in Spanish, is directed by beloved Spanish filmmaker Pedro Almodóvar, of the films including Dark Habits, Matador, Law of Desire, Tie Me Up Tie Me Down, High Heels, All About My Mother, Talk to Her, Bad Education, Volver, Broken Embraces, The Skin I Live In, I’m So Excited, Julieta, Pain & Glory, The Human Voice, Parallel Mothers, and the short Strange Way of Life. The screenplay is also written by Almodóvar, adapted from the novel titled “What Are You Going Through” by Sigrid Nunez. It’s produced by Agustín Almodóvar. This premiered at the 2024 Venice Film Festival and won the Golden Lion award. It’s already set to open in Spain in October. The Room Next Door debuts in the US on December 20th, 2024.
