Schools across Northside and San Antonio independent school districts have stopped serving strawberry milk after a handful of complaints, including one that went viral on Facebook.
In one post that has been shared more than 800 times, a parent with children at both SAISD and NISD said her son reported drinking milk that “had a funky taste and was slimy,” along with a picture of a pink, sticky substance poured onto a lunch tray.
That parent’s daughter, who attends NISD, reported drinking “chunky bad tasting strawberry milk” the next day, and was later taken to the hospital with complaints of stomach pain.
The parent did not respond to a request for comment Thursday.
Laura Short, a spokeswoman for SAISD said in a statement that the district was aware of the issue, “and addressed it immediately by pulling the affected milk, and our cafeteria staff are not serving it.”
“We are working with the vendor to receive a new batch,” she said. “The vendor already has begun picking up the affected milk with the respective manufacturing date from our schools, and we will be receiving replacements.”
Barry Perez, a spokesperson for NISD said the district has also received two complaints, and has seen others on social media.
The district’s child nutrition department “took steps and informed all schools to stop serving the strawberry milk immediately strictly as a precaution.”
Perez said the department is in contact with Oak Farms Dairy, the supplier of the product “to see what they can tell us about any potential issues.”
Oak Farms did not respond to a request for comment through their website Thursday.
Notifications have not been sent out to parents at NISD, according to Perez.
