Nuisance senatorial aspirant fights back: Comelec is ‘walang kwenta’

MANILA, Philippines — The emotions of senatorial aspirant Beth Lopez surged on Thursday as she called the Commission on Elections (Comelec) “walang kwenta ” (useless) for declaring her a nuisance candidate for the 2025 polls.

Lopez was one of the 117 senatorial aspirants the poll body considered nuisance candidates.

Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia said 14 motions for reconsideration cases have been filed as of Wednesday.

In a chance interview with INQUIRER.net, teary-eyed Lopez said she asked Comelec what qualifications it is looking from a senatorial candidate.

“Tinatanong ko nga sila doon kung anong qualification ang kailangan para sa ganon ay masabing ito talaga ang kailangan nyo,” she said.

(I asked them what qualifications are needed so that it can be said that these are what you need.)

“Gumawa ako nang mabuti. Gagawa ako nang mabuti sa taong bayan pero bale wala pa rin. Anong klaseng credentials ba ang gusto nyo?” the woman wondered.

(I did good things. I will do good things to the people but it is still not enough. What kind of credentials do you really want?)

“Tanga kayo… kaya ko sinasabi na pinakawalang kwentang ahensya ng gubyerno. Sinisisi ko kayo sa nangyari sa ating bansa,” Lopez said, referring to the Comelec.

(You are stupid. That’s why I am saying that you are the most useless government agency. I am blaming you for what is happening in the country.)

During the filing of COC, Lopez shared that the Comelec disqualified her from running as a senator in the previous polls because of poverty.

But Garcia previously said poverty and financial incapacity to stage an election campaign are not grounds for the poll body to declare an aspirant a nuisance candidate.

The commission is targeting to resolve all the cases of nuisance candidates before the end of November, in time for the printing of ballots in December.
