NYT ‘Connections’ December 3: Hints and Answers for Game #541

If you are looking to pass the time with today’s Connections puzzle, Newsweek is here to help you just in case you get stuck.

The brainteaser was launched by The New York Times in June 2023 and has gone on to become the newspaper’s second-most played game behind Wordle, another word-based puzzle.

Newsweek has put together some clues on how to play, as well as hints and the answers for Tuesday’s game, so be careful scrolling down if you want to solve it by yourself.

How to Play ‘Connections’

Connections tasks players with grouping 16 words into four categories based on association. For example, Monday’s game linked the words “Jazz,” “Modern,” “Swing” and “Tap” in the category “Dance Styles.”

The goal is to find the common theme for each category, represented by colors: yellow, green, blue, and purple. The categories increase in difficulty, with yellow being the simplest, followed by green, blue, and, finally, purple—the most challenging and often the most abstract. Some words may seem to fit multiple categories, which can be misleading.

The familiarity of the words used and how often they pop up in modern life are also difficulty factors, although less-common words aren’t only used in the harder categories. “Item overlap,” where one word can be linked to multiple categories, is another way in which Connections tests players.

There is no time limit, but players can make up to four mistakes only before the game ends, representing a loss. The player can also shuffle the board at any time, meaning the 16 words will be randomly repositioned.

Wyna Liu, a crossword editor at The Times who was asked to develop Connections, told Newsweek about her recommended tips for playing the game. She said that, if you have five cards that seem like they belong in the same category, move onto a different category and see if you can eliminate some of the words.

“Doing so might take one of those extra cards out of contention, or at least remove a few cards from the board, making other categories easier to see,” Liu said.
