“Isla isn’t just a gifted child… she’s much greater than that.” Vertical has revealed an official US trailer for a mysterious religious thriller called The King Tide, set in a struggling East Coast island community. This Canadian indie film first premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year, before opening in Canada earlier this year. After the mayor of an idyllic island village discovers a child with mysterious powers awash on their shores, the once peaceful community is divided by conflict, torn over the belief the child is the next savior. Isla’s adoptive parents must decide whether her safety takes precedence over what the community believes. The cast features Frances Fisher, Clayne Crawford, Aden Young, Michael Greyeyes, Lara Jean Chorostecki, and Kathryn Greenwood, with Alix West Lefler starring as 10-year-old Isla. TIFF describes it further: “It’s a story about an insular community refusing to accept a much larger world beyond its shores, mirroring our specific cultural circumstance while serving as a timeless meditation on faith and fundamentalism.” It looks like it has some very chilling, upsetting twists and turns as they sanctify this girl.

“Many thanks to Isla.” A struggling East Coast island community is given a mysterious lifeline when an infant washes up on their beach. The baby radiates a rejuvenating aura, healing anyone who spends a few moments in her presence. But after a decade of prosperity, Isla’s adoptive parents must decide whether her safety takes precedence over their community’s expectations. The King Tide is directed by the Canadian filmmaker Christian Sparkes, director of the films Cast No Shadow, Hammer, and Sweetland previously, plus many short films and series including “Hors Circuits” recently. The screenplay is written by Albert Shin & William Woods, from a story by Kevin Coughlin & Ryan Grassby. Produced by Allison White and William Woods. This initially premiered at the 2023 Toronto Film Festival last year, and it also played at the Busan Film Festival. The film already opened in Canadian theaters back in April earlier this year. Vertical debuts The King Tide in select US theaters + on VOD starting August 16th, 2024 this summer. Curious to watch?
