You probably remember what happened last year regarding Quentin Tarantino and his final film. It seemed as if everything was lining up perfectly for Tarantino to make “The Movie Critic.” Casting was already announced and a production start time was revealed. But then the whole thing fell apart. And now, it would appear that the filmmaker is in no rush to get to work on whatever his final film will be.

Speaking at a Sundance press conference (via Variety), Quentin Tarantino explained why he’s in “no hurry” to begin work on his final film, whatever that turns out to be. The filmmaker said his main concern is making sure his son is old enough to visit him on set and make memories.
“I’m in no hurry to actually jump into production,” Tarantino said. “I’ve been doing that for 30 years. Next month my son turns 5, and I have a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter. When I’m in America, I’m writing. When I’m in Israel? I’m an abba, which means father.”
He added, “The idea of jumping on a voyage when they’re too young to understand it is not enticing to me. I kind of want to not do whatever movie I end up doing until my son is at least 6. That way he’ll know what’s going on, he’ll be there, and it will be a memory for the rest of his life.”
It’s sweet to hear Tarantino talk so much about wanting to make memories with his children. As for film fans, it would appear that the wait is going to take a lot longer than originally anticipated. We went from expecting Tarantino’s new film this year perhaps to actually waiting at least another year before he begins production. That puts the earliest that we’ll see the new film in 2027.
As for what he’s currently writing, Tarantino says he’s working on a play. And if the play is a big enough hit, it could actually end up being the basis for his final film.

“If you’re wondering what I’m doing right now, I’m writing a play, and it’s going to be probably the next thing I end up doing,” he said. “If it’s a fiasco I probably won’t turn it into a movie. But if it’s a smash hit? It might be my last movie.”
While it’s nice of him to update us on what he’s working on next, we have to remember that Tarantino loves to tease projects that he may or may not ever release. So, until we see real movement on the play, we shouldn’t get too hyped up.
