Ryan Murphy Series Is a Massive Success for Joshua Jackson, ABC

Just when you thought Ryan Murphy couldn’t get any hotter, along comes another successful series that he has his fingerprints on. The creator of hits such as Glee, American Horror Story, and Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, has a lot to celebrate these days due in part to not only the buzz surrounding his latest Netflix offering, but also because of the debut of Doctor Odyssey on ABC, which he helped co-create, and has thus far managed to garner huge ratings across the board.

A new report from Deadline shares that the medical drama managed to reel in a massive 13.6 million cross-platform viewers in its first week, which is a 230% jump from its first day audience of 4.13 million. Doctor Odyssey now sits among the rare air of shows that – once they’ve premiered on network television – have managed to grow their audience to more than 10 million viewers in the first seven days thanks to streaming. Its first three days alone assembled 7.59 million folks, which is a testament to the unique premise behind the series that managed to intrigue a lot of folks enough for them to search it out and see what it’s all about.

While the majority of medical dramas have always taken place in a hospital, Doctor Odyssey bucks tradition to deliver a high-seas adventure that features Joshua Jackson as Dr. Max Bankman, a newly-hired physician aboard a luxury cruise ship who, along with his team, must handle a barrage of healthcare problems. Also starring Phillipa Soo as Nurse Avery Morgan, Sean Teale as Nurse Tristan Silva, and Don Johnson as Captain Robert Massey, the series includes cameos from such legends as John Stamos, Gina Gerson, and country music superstar Shania Twain. Each episode revolves around a particular theme, including Plastic Surgery Week, Wellness Week, and Halloween Week, all of which will air later this month.

Ryan Murphy Is On Fire Right Now

With the success of Doctor Odyssey, Murphy can add another notch to his belt, as his resume of hits continues to get fatter and fatter. The aforementioned Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story has been a tremendous triumph for Netflix, despite all the controversy surrounding it (which some might say has only helped the series). The anthological series has already been renewed for season three, with its junior outing choosing to put the focus on the notorious serial killer Ed Gein, who will be portrayed by Charlie Hunnam.

Grostesquerie starring Niecy Nash-Betts and Micaela Diamond has also proven to be a critical hit, currently sitting at 78% on Rotten Tomatoes. Murphy’s other network series for ABC, 9-1-1, continues to pull in steady ratings, with its eighth season recently kicking off with a crazy storyline that revolves around the escape of 22 million killer bees. Talk about buzz, right?

All that is to say that if you thought you were sick of Murphy before, get ready to be downright disgusted, because we still have the premiere of American Horror Stories to go later this month, as well as a number of other upcoming shows he’s a part of, including the legal drama All’s Fair, and another anthology series called American Love Story.
