“After the rapture, those left on Earth will suffer in silence.” IFC Films has revealed the first official trailer for an acclaimed indie horror film titled Azrael, from filmmaker E.L. Katz (of Cheap Thrills). This is also the latest film written by acclaimed horror screenwriter Simon Barret, known for A Horrible Way to Die, You’re Next, The Guest, Seance. It first premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year, and is now set for a theatrical release at the end of September throughout the October horror season. In a world no one speaks a devout female hunts down a young woman who has escaped her imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, Azrael is due to be sacrificed to pacify an ancient evil deep within the wilderness. What are these things?! Is it post-apocalyptic?? “From the seeds of this gritty, relentless parable of sacrifice and salvation, comes an immersive, real-time, action horror tale.” Starring Samara Weaving as Azrael, with Vic Carmen Sonne, Katariina Unt, and Nathan Stewart-Jarrett. In a world in which no one speaks, a mysterious, devout community hunts down a young woman named Azrael (Samara Weaving) who has escaped their imprisonment. Recaptured by its ruthless leaders, she is to be sacrificed to pacify an evil which resides deep within the surrounding wilderness – but Azrael will stop at nothing to ensure her own freedom and survival. Azrael is directed by American genre filmmaker E.L. Katz (aka Evan Katz), director of the films Cheap Thrills and Small Crimes previously, plus episodes of the series “Channel Zero”, “Swamp Thing”, and “The Haunting of Bly Manor” most recently; he’s also a writer on many horror projects. The screenplay is written by Simon Barrett (A Horrible Way to Die, You’re Next, The Guest, Blair Witch, Temple, Seance). Produced by Simon Barrett, Dave Caplan, and Dan Kagan. This initially premiered at the 2024 SXSW Film Festival earlier this year. IFC Films & Shudder will debut E.L. Katz’s Azrael in select US theaters starting on September 27th, 2024 this fall.
