Sarah Michelle Gellar is setting the record straight regarding a now viral moment that left some speculating there was some tension between her and Jennifer Love Hewitt. The two actresses famously co-starred in 1997’s I Know What You Did Last Summer; with a legacy sequel in the works, fans have kept their eyes open to see which of the original stars would return. Following an awkward exchange with a reporter that left social media users wondering if there were some unresolved issues between Gellar and Hewitt, Gellar took to social media to clear the air.
While attending the New York premiere of Dexter: Original Sin, Gellar was asked about the upcoming I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot, and she had nothing but praise for the film’s “incredible cast” and script. As the Extra reporter inquired about Hewitt’s possible involvement (which was not confirmed at the time), Gellar awkwardly responded: “I have nothing to do with that,” smiled, and walked away.
Gellar addressed the moment on Friday, December 13, through her Instagram stories. Under a chair on the set of I Know What You Did Last Summer, she wrote:
“Aspiring actors please note: this deer in the headlights reaction is perfect for when you are excited to see so many old friends in one project but have already stupidly forgotten what NDA means once this month.”
Her caption referenced a picture she shared when she visited her husband, actor Freddie Prinze Jr., on the reboot set, before a formal announcement had been made that filming had commenced. Another notable post shared in Gellar’s stories? Hewitt’s post announcing her return to the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise.
No Bad Blood Between Scream Queens
Days before Gellar’s viral interview, Hewitt appeared on the I’ve Never Said This Before With Tommy DiDario podcast, where she addressed rumors of a rift between the two actresses. When the host asked if the two were friends, Hewitt shared:
“Totally, I mean all of us were in that experience together kind of figuring it all out.”
Gellar starred in the original film as Helen Shivers, a teen beauty pageant queen. Although she won’t be returning for the reboot (Helen dies in the 1997 film), she is connected to the upcoming film in a couple of ways: her close friend Jennifer Kaytin Robinson is directing, and her husband is reprising his role as Ray Bronson. Prinze Jr. and Hewitt will join a cast that includes Madelyn Cline, Chase Sui Wonders, Lola Tung, Sarah Pidgeon, Tyriq Withers, and Jonah Haur-King. The I Know What You Did Last Summer reboot is set for a 2025 release.

The veteran Hollywood performer should have known better, but the moment simply got the better of the actor.

The Dexter prequel series follows the early days of the infamous killer and is set in early 1990s Miami. Dexter: Original Sin stars Patrick Gibson, Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey, Christina Milian, Molly Brown, Reno Wilson, James Martinez, Alex Shimizu, and Gellar.
