Sebastian Stan Says Marvel’s New Team-Up Film Reminds Him Of ‘One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest’

Today, Marvel decided to release a teaser (a tease that’s over three minutes long) for the upcoming team-up film, “Thunderbolts*.” The film shows a lot of action and seems to focus on a group of anti-heroes brought together for a common good. Most people are calling it Marvel’s version of “The Suicide Squad.” However, according to one person in the cast, it’s more like “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest.”

Speaking to Variety, Sebastian Stan talked about his new film, “The Apprentice,” where he plays Donald Trump. However, you can’t talk to Stan without mentioning his Marvel work as Bucky Barnes, which started way back in 2011’s “Captain America: The First Avenger.” As revealed in the “Thunderbolts*” teaser, it appears Stan’s Bucky plays a formative role in the team. And that’s something that reminds the actor of the aforementioned classic film.

Stan said Bucky’s role in “Thunderbolts*” “was kind of like ‘One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest’ — a guy coming into this group that was chaotic and degenerate, and somehow finding a way to unite them.”

The actor also talked about how Marvel films (not called “Deadpool & Wolverine”) have been struggling over the past few years. The actor doesn’t go so far as to say there’s superhero fatigue, but he understands the difficulty facing Marvel Studios in recent years. And he’s damn sure feeling protective over the MCU.

“It’s become really convenient to pick on [Marvel films],” Stan said. “And that’s fine. Everyone’s got an opinion. But they’re a big part of what contributes to this business and allows us to have smaller movies as well. This is an artery traveling through the system of this entire machinery that’s Hollywood. It feeds in so many more ways than people acknowledge.”

He continued, “Sometimes I get protective of it because the intention is really fucking good. It’s just fucking hard to make a good movie over and over again.”

Sebastian Stan’s new film “The Apprentice” will arrive in theaters on October 11. His next Marvel project, “Thunderbolts*” is expected to hit theaters on May 2, 2025.
