Sophie Turner to play Lara Croft in live-action Tomb Raider series

It looks like Fleabag creator Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s search for her Lara Croft in Amazon’s live-action Tomb Raider series has come to an end, with Deadline reporting that Game of Thrones and X-Men star Sophie Turner looks to set to become the latest actress to portray the video game icon.

Waller-Bridge boarded Amazon’s Tomb Raider series as writer and showrunner back in January of 2023, with the project receiving a series order in May of this year. Several actresses were reported to have tested for the lead role of adventurer Lara Croft in recent weeks, with Turner reportedly winning out ahead of the likes of Lucy Boynton (Bohemian Rhapsody). However, the casting is yet to be confirmed.

The Tomb Raider video game series first launched back in 1996, with its heroine Lara Croft quickly becoming a pop culture icon. The series has went on to become one of the bestselling video game franchises with over 100 million sales across its twelve main titles and numerous spinoffs. It also spawned three feature films (the first two starring Angelina Jolie and the latest Alicia Vikander), while Netflix has just debuted the animated series Tomb Raider: The Legend of Lara Croft featuring Hayley Atwell.
