We have no interest in writing about last night’s events in Pennsylvania except to say that, in this environment, everything washes out in three to four news cycles and becomes a punchline within a week. Everyone thinks this changes everything, and yet, not one soul has changed their mind.
We are here, instead, to remember three notable figures from the entertainment world who passed away this weekend.
Shannen Doherty died yesterday at the age of 53 after battling breast cancer for several years. The Beverly Hills 90210 star had been outspoken about her fight with cancer since her diagnosis in 2015. Doherty was also known for her roles in Our House, Heathers, Mallrats, and several seasons of Charmed. In recent years, she became a public personality and podcast regular, sharing her experiences and making amends for her turbulent celebrity life. She had become a beloved figure beyond her acting work, known for her indomitable spirit and perseverance in the face of death. She’s gone too soon and will be missed.
Richard Simmons, the fitness personality best known for his Sweatin’ to the Oldies videos, also passed away at the age of 76. Many of us knew him for his numerous talk-show appearances, where he was often the good-natured butt of jokes. His terrific sense of humor made him a popular guest on game shows like Hollywood Squares, late-night shows like David Letterman’s, and sitcoms like Arrested Development. Simmons had largely disappeared from public life since 2014, although he recently spoke out against Pauly Shore making a movie about him. It’s hard to understate what an infectiously joyous person he was and just how infectious that joy was.
Finally, Dr. Ruth Westheimer has passed away at the age of 96. The psychosexual therapist was best known for her candid conversations about sex on her long-running radio show and in the 35 books she wrote throughout her career. Like Simmons, David Letterman played a significant role in making Dr. Ruth a household name through her talk show appearances. A Holocaust survivor, Westheimer led a remarkable life and was a unique character. She leaves behind two children, four grandchildren, and a world better for her contributions.
May their memories be a blessing.
