Yvonne Strahovski has offered a hopeful update regarding the development of a sequel the Prime Video sci-fi action hit, The Tomorrow War. Speaking with Comicbook.com amid the release of Strahovski’s horror TV series Teacup, the actress revealed what she knows about the development of The Tomorrow War 2, which was given the greenlight by Amazon back in 2021.
The follow-up is expected to once again follow Guardians of the Galaxy star Chris Pratt2 as a teacher who, along with others, is called to fight against an alien army in the future. Strahovski reasoned that, while she “probably” can’t say too much about the project, she is “hopeful” that things will work out. Which certainly sounds like that greenlight may have dimmed a little…
“I, unfortunately, probably cannot say anything about it. I am hopeful that it will work out, but that’s it. That’s all I got on that.”
Released back in 2021, The Tomorrow War has an undeniably enticing concept. The story begins when the world is stunned by the arrival of a group of time travelers who have traveled from the year 2051 to deliver an urgent message: thirty years in the future, mankind is losing a global war against a deadly alien species. The only hope for survival is for soldiers and civilians from the present to be transported to the future and join the fight.
Directed by The Lego Movie’s Chris McKay in his live-action directorial debut, The Tomorrow War stars Chris Pratt as a biology teacher and former Green Beret who signs up to fight, with Yvonne Strahovski playing his estranged adult daughter (in the future) and military scientist. The rest of the cast includes J.K. Simmons, Betty Gilpin, Sam Richardson, Edwin Hodge, Jasmine Mathews, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, and Keith Powers.
The Tomorrow War Proved To Be Divisive
Unfortunately, despite the captivating concept, The Tomorrow War proved to be deeply divisive, and currently stands at 52% from critics and 76% from audiences on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes. Originally set for a theatrical release by Paramount Pictures, and with a budget of $200 million, the movie suffered at the viral hands of COVID-19 and was instead picked up by Prime Video. The movie saw huge viewership on the streaming platform, being watched by 2.41 million households in its first week. Thus, a sequel was put into development quickly, with Amazon interested in spawning a new franchise with Pratt at the forefront.

Was The Tomorrow War a Hit or a Flop?
The Tomorrow War cost $200 million but reportedly only brought in $19 million. Did the movie really bomb that bad, or is there more to the story?
McKay is expected to return to helm The Tomorrow War 2, with the filmmaker having previously teased what he has in mind for the continuing adventures of these everyday soldiers from the present who must fight for humanity in the future.
“We talked about the world of these creatures, where they came from, how they were created or raised, and how they were maybe being used. I like world-building experiments, especially when you have the potential of some kind of time travel. I think that a sequel could go in a lot of fun areas and the ethnographic study of the whitespikes in their world and where they came from, and what their purpose was, and all of that kind of thing. So yeah, I think that could be a lot of fun. And with this cast, too, we’re just getting started.”
