Trinity University is thrilled to welcome political strategists Paul Begala and Michael Steele for the 2024-25 Distinguished Lecture Series on the “Future of American Political Leadership: Navigating Partisanship and Promoting Unity.” The lecture is part of Trinity’s The Conversation series and will take place on Thursday, Oct. 10, at 7:30 p.m. in Laurie Auditorium.
Michael Steele, former chairman of the Republican National Committee and a leading political analyst, and Paul Begala, a Democratic political consultant and commentator, will explore the evolving landscape of American politics. The conversation will be moderated by David Lesch, who has a doctorate in history and Middle Eastern studies and is Trinity’s Ewing Halsell Distinguished Professor of History. Begala and Steele will deliberate on the challenges and opportunities confronting both major parties, examining the impact of current events and how future political leaders can navigate rising partisanship while fostering unity and cooperation.
“In a time fraught with political divisiveness and heated rhetoric, this event offers us an opportunity to see and hear two well-known politicos with divergent views on many issues intelligently engage in a civil debate,” said Lesch. “The discussion will delve into the nature of political leadership in this country and how we can navigate the partisanship and political volatility associated with the upcoming presidential election.”
Steele made history as the first African American elected to statewide office in Maryland and the first African American chairman of the Republican National Committee (RNC). During his tenure as RNC chair, Steele revitalized the Republican Party, breaking fundraising records and leading the party to significant electoral victories in 2010. A frequent political analyst on MSNBC, Steele is known for his insightful commentary on American politics, including appearances on major news programs like “Meet the Press” and “Real Time with Bill Maher.” Steele’s leadership and communication skills have earned him a reputation as a significant figure in contemporary Republican politics.
Begala is currently a commentator for CNN and has been recognized with an Emmy and a Peabody Award. His career highlights include serving as a senior strategist for Bill Clinton’s 1992 presidential campaign and as Counselor to the President during Clinton’s presidency. Begala has also played key roles in numerous other political campaigns, including the Obama-Biden reelection in 2012. He is the author of six books on politics, many of which became New York Times bestsellers, and has taught at several prestigious universities. Begala’s insights into political strategy and his ability to engage with contemporary issues make him a prominent voice in political discourse today.
