Congratulations started pouring in from leaders across the world after it became clear Donald Trump had won the US presidential election.
Canadian President Justin Trudeau shared a photograph of himself with Trump on social media site X, and said the two countries had a friendship that was “the envy of the world”.
“I know President Trump and I will work together to create more opportunity, prosperity, and security for both of our nations,” he said.
In Europe, Portuguese Prime Minister Luis Montenegro said on X that he looked forward to working with Trump, and Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis said Greece “looks forward to further deepening in the strategic partnership between our two countries”.
They followed congratulations from French President Emmanuel Macron, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and the heads of NATO and the European Council.
Before Trump’s victory was sealed, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said he had no information on whether Russian President Vladimir Putin planned to congratulate the US president-elect, emphasising that Russia views the US as an “unfriendly” country.
Congratulations have also come from Asia. South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol wrote on X that the US-South Korean alliance would “shine brighter” following Trump’s victory, and Japan’s Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba said he hoped to work with Trump to “further elevate Japan-US relations”.
Last night, Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese also congratulated Trump on his victory and said they would work together to “ensure the partnership between our nations and peoples remains strong into the future”.
