Hello and welcome to 9news.com.au’s live coverage of the 2024 US presidential election.
Republican Donald Trump is hoping to win a second term in office, eight years after he was first elected president, while Kamala Harris is looking to become the first woman to become president and keep the Democrats in the White House.
Polls have just opened in Connecticut, Kentucky, Maine, New Jersey, New York and Virginia, and voting centres will continue to kick into gear between now and 3am AEDT tomorrow morning – five hours’ time from now.
The first polls close at 10am AEDT tomorrow morning, and it could be some hours – if not days – until a winner is declared.
The election is widely expected to come down to just seven crucial battleground states: Pennsylvania, Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan, Wisconsin, Nevada and Arizona.
Harris and Trump have been neck-and-neck in the polls in all of them, meaning all seven could fall to either candidate.
The only thing that’s clear at the moment is that it looks like this race is going to be an exceptionally close one.
