Twisters spins towards impressive $123 million at the worldwide box-office

Twisters was expected to kick up at storm at the worldwide box-office this weekend, but nobody expected the 30-years in the making sequel to blow away expectations to the tune of $123 million.

Going into the weekend the Lee Isaac Chung-directed disaster movie was set to whip up around $50 million at the North American box-office, but it eviscerated that figure with a whopping $80.5 million haul. Add to that the $27.1 million it earned from its continued international rollout and the Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell and Anthony Ramos-starrer has an impressive $123.2 million in the tank before Deadpool & Wolverine storms into theatres next week.

Twisters added to the much-needed late-summer bump at the box-office, where Despicable Me 4 was in second place with $23 million its third weekend of release, taking its domestic total to $259 million, and its worldwide cume to $574 million.

As impressive as that is, Disney’s Pixar’s Inside Out 2 broke even more records at number 3, adding $12.7 million to its whopping $596.4 million North American total. It will soon take Frozen 2‘s title of highest grossing animated film of all time, which currently sits at $1.45 billion.

It wasn’t just the blockbusters doing boffo business either, because Neon’s horror-smash Longlegs dipped just 48%, which is well below the usual genre drop-off of around 60%. The Maika Monroe and Nicolas Cage-starrer landed at number 4 with an $11.7 million weekend. It’s domestic total currently stands at a studio high total of $44.6 million.
