Two Jim Carrey Robotniks Unleash Keanu Reeves’ Shadow

Is that the jovial sound of a shining, spinning ring being acquired, we hear? Why yes, yes it is – and it’s because the trailer for a certain wise-cracking, trainer-wearing blue hedgehog’s newest big-screen outing just dropped. Ben Schwartz returns as the voice of Sonic in Sonic The Hedgehog 3, alongside Idris Elba’s Knuckles and Colleen O’Shaughnessey’s Tails – but this time, the animated trio have got a surprising new foe – and potential ally? Watch the trailer below:

Yep, this time, Sonic and co. are facing two moustachioed bad guys, with a double, prosthetic-laden performance from Jim Carrey as both Dr Robotnik and his grandfather Gerald. Their dastardly plan is to unleash Sonic’s arch-rival Shadow, who, in a move of impeccable voice-casting, has the dulcet tones of one Keanu Reeves.

After Sonic, Knuckles and Tails’ trip to Tokyo is rudely interrupted and they’re captured by the Robotniks, they end up teleporting through some kind of black hole to the home of Sonic’s somewhat-adoptive parents Tom (James Marsden) and Maddie (Tika Sumpter), whom they recruit to help stop the evil doctors from using Shadow’s power to rule humanity. That speedy blue hedgehog has come a long way from the ol’ Green Hill Zone, hasn’t he?

Sonic The Hedgehog 3 spins into cinemas from 27 December.
