Slowly but steadily this summer, Russian troops have been forging through Ukraine’s outgunned and undermanned defenses in a relentless onslaught, prompting the West to push for new weapons and strategies to shore up Kyiv.

Moscow’s forces overran two villages on the Ukrainian front-line in Donetsk, a Ukrainian army sergeant said on Monday. The news came following relentless assaults that are part of a Kremlin push to overwhelm defences in that region.

The US announced $1.7 billion in military aid to Ukraine on Monday, including an array of munitions for air defence systems, artillery, mortars and anti-tank missiles.

The latest infusion of weapons comes just over two weeks from a NATO summit in Washington where allies focused a significant amount of time shoring up support for Ukraine as it fends off Russian forces.

Ukraine announced plans to involve Russia in the second Peace Summit, with one of Kyiv’s spokespeople saying the main question is whether Moscow will conduct the negotiations in good faith.

The spokesperson added that if the Russians refuse to sit down at the negotiating table, it will become clear who wants peace and who does not.
