Victorians urged to stay home as wild winds of up to 130km/h set to lash state

Destructive winds are set to lash large parts of Victoria today, bringing dangerous surf conditions and gusts strong enough to rip down trees.

Wild gusts reaching up to 130km/h are threatening south-east parts of the country, including parts of Tasmania.

Victoria SES issued a severe weather warning to those living in central and southern Victoria, warning damaging conditions are set to strengthen this afternoon ahead of a cold front.

Central Victoria, including parts of metropolitan Melbourne, is bracing for damaging west to northwesterly winds averaging 50 to 65km/h, with destructive wind gusts up to 130km/h set to hit from this afternoon.

Strong gusts are also expected around western Victoria, Geelong, the Mornington Peninsula and Gippsland.

The Northeast Ranges are looking at winds up to 130km/h heading into this evening and early tomorrow.

SES has advised locals to stay informed and be aware of potential hazards caused by the severe weather.

It also warned Victorians to avoid going outside and work from home if possible.

These hazards include debris, damaged buildings, fallen trees and branches and fallen power lines.

Thunderstorms and heavy bouts of rain are also set to lash the state.

Winds are set to ease on Tuesday with only light to moderate gusts.
