Now, in Star Trek #23, fans see what might be the franchise’s most awe-inspiring bit of tech yet, and its source is none other than Wesley Crusher, now a member of the enigmatic Travelers.

Star Trek

The Next Generation’s
first season.

Star Trek #23 was written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly and drawn by Megan Levens. In the previous issue, Wesley slipped his mother a seemingly harmless looking ink pen. As issue 23 opens, Scotty is seeking a way to stop Lore from destroying the Pleroma. Suddenly, a door opens, and Doctor Crusher pulls Scotty through.

Wesley Crusher’s Connection to the Travelers, Explained

Despite Appearances Across the Star Trek Franchise, the Travelers Are Still An Enigma

Wesley Crusher’s arc in the Star Trek franchise has seen him progress from a precocious teenager into something far more. In the seventh season Star Trek: The Next Generation episode “Journey’s End,” Wesley left our reality to join the Travelers. At the time, nothing was revealed about the Travelers, but season two of Star Trek: Picard changed all of that. As the season played out, fans got a glimpse at the Traveler’s awesome powers, which spanned space and time. Wesley even made a cameo in the season finale, recruiting Kore Soong to the cause.

The most recent arc of IDW’s Star Trek comic, “The Pleroma,” has revealed even more about the mysterious Travelers, namely that they serve the franchise’s “gods.” This has made the Travelers an obvious target for those wishing to kill the gods, such as Kahless and Lore. In Star Trek #22, Doctor Crusher was reunited with Wesley, but it was short and bittersweet. Wesley was cryptic with his mother, almost as if he had resigned himself to his fate. However, Wesley did give Doctor Crusher the pen she used to save Scotty.

These god-level pens are standard issue for Travelers, as Kore Soong used one in a previous issue, and it raises questions about what other fantastic technology the Travelers may be sitting on. The Travelers have the ability to travel through time and space, which gives them access to not only technology developed in-house, such as the pens, but also objects from other time frames and cultures across the Star Trek universe. Yet for all the Traveler’s advanced technology, Wesley Crusher was still unable to stop Lore’s evil plan, perhaps implying there is a limit to his power.
