Why Halle Berry Didn’t Reprise Her Role as Storm in Deadpool & Wolverine

Deadpool & Wolverine included a hefty collection of cameos, but despite featuring some pretty big and unexpected legacy returns, one rumored appearance that did not happen was Halle Berry reprising her role as X-Men‘s Storm. While there have been many reasons why some former stars did not return for the movie, it seems that Berry’s absence is explained in the simplest of ways: Ryan Reynolds didn’t ask her.

While it seems like there has to be more to it than that, according to ComicBook.com, Berry was willing to dust down Storm’s old suit if the Deadpool actor had asked her to join the cast, but instead, the only person who approached her about returning to her role was Ladypool herself, Blake Lively. During the red carpet event for the action thriller The Union, which will premiere exclusively on Netflix on August 16, Berry took the mic to answer the question of why she did not appear in this year’s runaway hit movie.

“Blake [Lively] asked me one time, I ran into her at a Marc Jacobs fashion show, and she said, ‘Would you ever be in my husband’s movie as Storm?’ I said, ‘Yeah, if he asked me,’ but he never asked me.”

Considering the origins of Wolverine in the Marvel universe and the numerous times Hugh Jackman played the character alongside Berry’s Storm, there were many fans disappointed that this cameo did not happen. So, the real crux of the matter is why Reynolds did not make this particular fan-favorite reunion happen in a mindblowing cameo? It seems that is something that, for now, we still don’t quite know.

Last year, Berry had posted a picture on X, formerly known as Twitter, that many saw as a sign of her reprisal as Storm, thanks to a change of hair color for the actress. When Deadpool & Wolverine was announced, and the film was suspected to include several members of the Marvel multiverse and the MCU, Berry’s return as Storm was among the most highly-anticipated possible cameos.

Deadpool & Wolverine Keeps Smashing Records

Deadpool & Wolverine is a groundbreaking film for Disney, and a much needed commercial hit for Marvel Studios after 2023’s lackluster showing at the box office. Recently, the R-rated movie broke the $1 billion barrier, and has shown no signs of stopping soon. Released on July 26, 2024, the movie took only a few weeks to achieve the giddy heights of the $1 billion club, and is guaranteed to break the record for the highest-grossing R-rated movie of all time (currently held by 2019’s Joker).

Deadpool & Wolverine’s success is a sign of so much more for Disney and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. After almost two decades of playing in the family-friendly PG-13 arena, the movie has proven that R-rated Marvel offerings are more than capable of delivering a strong performance if done right. In the last few months, the new iteration of Blade – which has been struggling in development hell – has gone from being a PG-13 affair to an R-rated one, and the box office win for Deadpool & Wolverine will only bolster the belief that this is the right way to go for Blade and several other movie and TV projects.
