Yankees add three players to 40-man roster, including former top prospect Taylor Trammell

The Yankees added three players to their 40-man roster on Sunday night, choosing to protect OF Taylor Trammell, RHP Yerry de los Santos, and catcher J.C. Escarra from minor league free agency.

Trammell, 27, was claimed by New York off waivers from the Los Angeles Dodgers on April 18. He was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Reds with the No. 35 pick in the 2016 MLB Draft. Trammell was named MVP of the 2018 All-Star Futures Games and was then traded twice, first to San Diego in 2019 and then to Seattle in 2020. He debuted with Seattle in 2021 and played there for three seasons until being DFA’d before the 2024 season.

Trammell was claimed by LA in April and played five games for the Dodgers before he was waived again and picked up by the Yankees. He played five games for NY with just two plate appearances before spending the rest of the year with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. The outfielder hit .256 with 18 home runs, 20 doubles, two triples, and 63 RBI over 106 games. He owns a .167 career batting average in the MLB over 126 games with 15 homers and 16 doubles.

De los Santos, 26, was signed by the Yankees as a minor league free agent last November after being in the Pittsburgh Pirates organization since 2015. He made his major league debut in 2022 and pitched in 48 games for Pittsburgh over two seasons, owning a 1-4 record and 4.14 ERA with 44 strikeouts. The right-hander pitched in 51 games for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre during the 2024 season, going 2-2 with a 4.12 ERA and 55 strikeouts over 51 games (59.0 IP).

Escarra, 29, was signed by the Yankees as a minor league free agent in January and split time between Somerset and Scranton/Wilkes-Barre. Over 124 combined games, Escarra hit .261 with 12 home runs, 32 doubles, three triples, and 64 RBI.

MLB teams can begin to officially sign players on Monday at 5 p.m., five days after the World Series has ended.
