You May Have Missed It, But Superman Just Revisited One of DC’s Most Magical (and Underrated) Heroines

Superman has accrued many iconic allies over his superhero career as a Justice League member and Earth’s resident Kryptonian, but none is more magically unique and underutilized than Amethyst of Gemworld. Amethyst’s brief but impactful appearance alongside Clark Kent and Lois Lane brings to light that this DC Princess is an underrated powerhouse, one who needs to play a larger role in the DCU.

In Superman #21 – written by Joshua Williamson, with art by Dan Mora – Superman and Lois Lane, with her newly acquired powers as Superwoman, are on a date, when they are interrupted by Amethyst of Gemworld, who tells them the House of Onyx is invading her kingdom. Princess Amethy and the Super-couple subsequently take on Onyx’s army, with Lois Lane helping Amethyst and the Onyx Queen come to a truce agreement.

Despite her brief cameo, Amethyst’s updated redesign beautifully showcases her as a magical superhero and a powerful warrior princess with intriguing lore begging to make a comeback to DC Comics.

Amethyst, also known as Amy Winston, appears in both Crisis on Infinite Earths and Infinite Crisis as the Princess of Gemworld, a realm that draws magic from gemstones and was originally controlled by the Lords of Chaos. Amethyst has shown to be a truly powerful superhero with seemingly limitless abilities such as telekinesis, dimensional warping, astral projection, and the ability to do high-level magic. Not only does she have incredible abilities, it is eventually revealed that Princess Amethyst is a Lord of Order, and one of the few that have a human form similar to Doctor Fate.

In Infinite Crisis, it was hinted that Amethyst was able to fend against the Spectre, and at the beginning of Amethyst (Vol.2) #13 – written by Keith Griffin, with art by Robert Loren Flemming – Doctor Fate even thinks Amethyst may ultimately be one of the most powerful beings in the DC Universe. Amethyst’s new intricate hero design in Superman #21 perfectly balances her identity as both a magical gemstone-powered princess and a mighty warrior. Amethyst’s cameo alongside Superman is very brief, but her new superhero design, rich lore, and powers as a Lord of Order are the perfect stepping stones to refresh her character and bring the underrated superhero, Amethyst of Gemworld, back into the spotlight.
