As we approach the end of 2024, it looks like we’re leaving the year with just as much confusion about “Star Trek 4” as we entered. Paramount has still not confirmed what is going on with the film side of the franchise, and it appears the actors are just as in the dark as us.

Speaking to Deadline, while promoting the release of her film “Emilia Perez,” Zoe Saldaña was asked about the current situation surrounding “Star Trek 4.” Apparently, she doesn’t know anything either, but she does hope that it happens soon because the cast is starting to show signs of aging. (Her words, not ours.)
“I wish we were able to do it sooner rather than later,” said Saldaña. “I feel like a lot of us have a full head of gray hair, so we need to do this quickly, if this is the same cast that’s going to reprise it again.”

As for what she would like to see in a “Star Trek 4,” Saldaña talked about the subplot involving the relationship between Spock (played by Zachary Quinto) and her own Uhura.
She added, “It’s been a minute since I reconnected with ‘Star Trek’ and all the characters’ journeys, but Uhura and Spock were always sort of drawn to each other, it just makes sense to see what is the next step in their relationship and their work relationship as well.”

Again, it’s unclear what’s happening with the “Star Trek” film franchise. There have been a number of writers assigned to pen the script. The last time a director was attached was Matt Shakman, who left to go film “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” There were even “Star Trek” films that were in development that didn’t feature the main cast. Alas, nothing has been greenlit, and it’s starting to feel like time is running out.
Maybe 2025 will give us better news regarding the future of the “Star Trek” film franchise.
